There was a time when I focused far too much on dressing perfectly. I thought every detail had to be flawless, pressed and precisely in place. Over time, I realised that this excess was taking me away from beauty and stifling my style.
I came to understand that elegance is about naturalness, not perfection. Just then, I came across a word: sprezzatura.
For the first time, I had found a word that described my style.
What is sprezzatura?
Baldassare Castiglione describes the idea in “Il Cortegiano” (The Book of the Courtier), published in 1528. Applied to clothing, I take it to mean putting thought into a look without making the effort the first thing people notice.
Everything is chosen, yet it feels relaxed. Its effect lies in wearing the clothes rather than displaying the work behind them.
