What kind of watch brand is Junghans? A personal look at German watchmaking

We talk about Swiss brands often. This time, I’m turning to Germany: Junghans’s history, the Max Bill design language and the Meister Chronoscope 27/7620.03 I recently bought.

The short answer: Junghans is a German watchmaker rooted in Schramberg, in the Black Forest. Founded in 1861 to produce clock components, the company is known today for mechanical watches, radio-controlled models and a distinctive design language. This time, I’m looking beyond the Swiss names we often discuss and taking a closer look at German watchmaking through the Junghans Meister Chronoscope 27/7620.03, which I bought from Konyalı Saat.

Swiss watchmaking naturally takes up a lot of room in conversations about mechanical watches. But considered watch design does not belong to one country alone. Germany has its own deep and distinctive watchmaking tradition. What makes Junghans interesting is not simply its German origin, but the way it brings its history into a contemporary design language.

Where is Junghans from?

Junghans is a German watch brand. According to the company’s own history, Erhard Junghans founded it in Schramberg in 1861, initially producing clock components. By 1903, it had become the world’s largest clock factory. The company is still based in Schramberg, in the Black Forest. That history gives Junghans more than age: it connects the brand to a place and a manufacturing culture.

Many people first associate Junghans with Bauhaus designer Max Bill. The Max Bill collection—with its restrained dial and emphasis on function—is one of the brand’s best-known expressions. But Junghans is not limited to minimalist watches. The Meister Chronoscope I chose has a more classical, expressive character, with chronograph functions built into the design.

What is the Junghans Meister Chronoscope 27/7620.03 like?

What first drew me in was the way the watch’s classical and sporty sides coexist without either overwhelming the other. The silver-toned dial, gold-coloured case coating and brown leather strap make for a warm, timeless combination. The chronograph sub-dials add a technical quality, while the ordered layout and fine indices balance that visual activity. It catches the eye without trying too hard.

I bought this model from Konyalı Saat. “Timeless” is an easy word to reach for in watch writing; here, I mean that the design does not rely on a single passing trend. Gold tones, a silver dial and a brown strap have been a dependable combination for years. The chronograph layout adds a little energy to the classical appearance. I’ll be able to say more about how it wears and feels in daily life after spending more time with it; for now, this is my first personal note on the brand and the design.

Different design faces of Junghans

Max Bill’s clean, graphic dial is one of the brand’s most recognisable signatures. Meister sits closer to traditional watchmaking; the Chronoscope I chose is a more characterful chronograph within that family. The Pilot line takes a functional approach inspired by aviation instruments. These three design languages show how wide Junghans’s range can be.

Are German watches good quality?

A watch’s quality is not determined by its country label alone; movement, finishing, design, service support and price all matter. Still, German watchmaking is rightly associated with precision engineering, functional design and manufacturing discipline. Junghans’s history grew within that tradition. For me, the appeal of this model is less a shortcut such as “it’s German, therefore it’s good” and more the coherence of its design.

There is no need to pit Swiss and German watches against each other to choose a winner. Both traditions have their own strengths. This time, I made room in my watch box for a classically styled chronograph from Germany.

Should you buy the Junghans Meister Chronoscope?

The Meister Chronoscope 27/7620.03 is worth considering if you want chronograph functions in a classical design, like the combination of a gold-tone case and leather strap, and are looking beyond the most familiar designs. Before buying, consider the 40.7 mm case size and 5-bar water-resistance rating against your wrist and how you plan to use the watch. It is also worth checking the current price.

My choice came down to the way its elements meet: silver dial, brown leather and gold tones. After wearing it for a few weeks, I’d like to write separately about how those first impressions hold up in everyday life. For now, I can say this: if Swiss watchmaking is part of the conversation, Junghans is a good reason to bring German watchmaking to the table, too.
